Susan Jenkins, Ph.D.

Dr. Jenkins serves as the Energy Biosciences Institute's chief administrator and manages the staff at EBI Berkeley. As the lead administrator for research and operations, she is a key point person for short and long-term strategic planning. Her institutional oversight includes coordination of the research proposal and funding process, financial management, communications programs, intellectual property management, IT and facilities planning, and education and outreach activities.

A plant biologist, Dr. Jenkins served for three years as Assistant Chair of UC Berkeley's Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, where she had researched biochemical pathways and regulatory gene networks after receiving her Ph.D. She served for five years as Prinicipal Administrator for the UC Berkeley-Novartis Strategic Research Alliance, an innovative public-private partnership. Prior to coming to UC Berkeley, she also spent time in academic positions at the Salk Institute and UC Davis.

Among her service in external affairs for the EBI is a term as President of the Council of Energy Research and Education Leaders, a 30-university international consortium committed to advancing the role of higher education in the energy field to improve education, decision-making and societal well-being. On a local level, she has served on the Chabot Space and Science Laboratory Advisory Committee and has presented numerous talks at regional, national, and international forums on behalf of the EBI. She also has a secret life as an weekend photographer.
